Developer Bluepoint Games, which created 2017’s Shadow of the Colossus remake, is rebuilding Demon’s Souls from the ground up. It’s a glossier, more refined version of the PS3 classic, but one that stays true to the original’s gameplay and level of difficulty. Fortunately, this is happened, and when the remake of Demon’s Souls was introduced, I wanted to shout for joy.

It was true in 2009, when developer FromSoftware released the mechanically groundbreaking role-playing game on PlayStation 3, and remains true for Bluepoint Games’ remake, released alongside Sony’s PlayStation 5 this week. It doesn’t matter what class you choose, because most start you off at a low level, and you can tailor your character to your particular play style by leveling up. If you can’t decide, try playing as the Knight (good for combat), Priest/Temple Knight (good for self-healing) or Royalty (good for casting ranged magic).

A pack of five 4K screens were released by Sony, showing the opening tutorial areas. Parallax occlusion mapping is used liberally to add extra detail, reflecting Bluepoint’s work on Shadow of the Colossus where POM, screen-space reflections, light shafts, and swaying foliage were all present. The Demon’s Souls remake does much of this too, but goes the extra mile to completely rebuild the scene. It’s curious to see the updates to the knight’s armour as well. The interaction with oncoming light is more natural all round though, with reflections playing against the top and right sides where the sun is shining from. Demon’s Souls, just like most other Soulsborne titles, features co-operative multiplayer to help players get through even the most intense segments of the adventure.
You can now tackle any area you wish to complete first and it is entirely up to the player which one they wish to choose. The best place to begin soul farming at the start of the game is the Shrine of Storms. Make sure to equip a blunt weapon like a Mace, or acquire the Falchion — it’s located past the first skeletons, through the interior and out to a balcony guarded by a tough Black Skeleton. Before Dark Souls, before Bloodborne and Sekiro, there was Demon’s Souls — and like those games, you’ll have to collect soul to level up or buy items. If you die, you’ll lose your currency and have to brave the dungeons again to get it back — and you’ll only have one try. But given how Returnal is now primed for a February 2023 PC launch, things might be slowly changing. In a way, Demon’s Souls is the spiritual predecessor of From Software’s Dark Souls, which became a critical and commercial success thanks to its crushing difficulty and challenging bosses.
